
Lakehead University has offered Finnish Language and culture courses for well over 25 years. From 1986 to June 1996, the Canadian Suomi Foundation funded the Finnish course at Lakehead University. The official launch of the Chair in Finnish Studies at Lakehead University took place on Friday, May 24, 1996. His Excellency Mr. Veijo Sampovaara of Finland was in attendance at the event as were representatives of the Canadian Suomi Foundations and the local Finnish community.
When the chair of Finnish Studies was established, the University agreed to continue to offer at least one Finnish Language course in each academic year regardless of enrolment levels.
